Charging in the largest electric car charging network increased by 35%

Statistics from Estonia’s largest charging network clearly show continued growth in the use of electric cars. During the first six months of 2026, electric car drivers consumed more than a third more electricity in Enefit’s public charging network than in the same period a year earlier.

Compared with the first half of last year, nearly 469 megawatt-hours – or 35% – more electricity had been charged in the public charging network by the beginning of July this year. This amount of energy would be enough to cover about 2.5 million kilometres in an average electric car, or to drive more than 60 times around the globe.

‘Charging volumes for electric vehicles are growing rapidly, and this shows that electric cars are becoming an increasingly common part of mobility in Estonia. While last year such high charging volumes were still rather exceptional, this year they have become the new normal,’ said Robert Kutsar, Head of Business Development for e-mobility at Enefit.

Consistently higher charging volumes are also visible from week to week. While in the first half of 2025 the charging volume at Enefit’s public chargers did not exceed the 80,000 kilowatt-hour mark in any week, in 2026 this level has already been consistently exceeded for several consecutive weeks. Moreover, the record week for charging has brought a charging volume about one-third higher than last year’s charging record.

The growth was particularly notable at the beginning of the year. In January, use of Enefit’s charging network increased by about three-quarters compared with the same month last year. According to Kutsar, the growth in charging volume reflects the wider adoption of electric cars and drivers’ growing confidence in using electric vehicles both for everyday trips and for longer journeys. ‘The same trend is also confirmed by electric car registration statistics. Since April, more than 300 electric cars a month have been added to the roads,’ added Kutsar.

Enefit will continue to develop the charging network to support the growth of electrification in the transport sector and to provide customers with convenient charging options across Estonia and the nearby region.
