Eesti Energia celebrates its 87th birthday on 9 May with a family day at the Energy Discovery Centre

The Eesti Energia Group will celebrate its 87th birthday on 9 May with a family day at the Energy Discovery Centre, where families and children will be able to explore the world of energy and learn more about a sector that is playing an increasingly important role in the future of both Estonia and Europe.

Founded in 1939, Eesti Energia has grown into a regional energy company operating not only in Estonia, but also in its three other home markets – Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Seventy-seven years ago, Eesti Energia began producing electricity at the Kohtla-Järve thermal power plant with a single 12 MW boiler. By the end of 2025, the company's production capacity had grown nearly 200-fold to 2,298 MW. This also reflects well the broader transformation of the energy sector – a shift from traditional energy production towards more diverse and flexible energy solutions.

The anniversary of the Eesti Energia Group coincides with Europe Day on 9 May, which celebrates cooperation between European countries and a jointly shaped future. ‘We increasingly see the development of the energy system as part of international cooperation – whether in terms of energy security, market operation or new technologies. Today, the energy sector directly affects everyone’s everyday life – from electricity prices to security of supply,’ said Andrus Durejko, Chairman of the Management Board of Eesti Energia.

‘If we want Estonia to continue to have a strong and well-functioning energy system in the future, we already need to be thinking about who will build it tomorrow. Interest in technology and energy often begins at an early age – when children are able to experiment, ask questions and discover things for themselves, they also begin to understand that this is an exciting and meaningful field,’ added Durejko. The family day taking place at the Energy Discovery Centre will give visitors the opportunity to take part in workshops, try out energy- and science-related activities, and gain practical insight into how electricity and energy function in everyday life.
